John Reeck, Director of St. Mary’s Emergency Department, wrote a very honest article where he discusses what he wishes he knew before becoming an emergency department nurse. This article is less informational and formal than other articles I have linked before; John Reeck describes his personal, candid experiences and encounters in the ER. According to the article, nurses in the emergency department have an amazing ability to remain calm even in the most hectic situations and their ability to multitask is impressive. But despite these abilities, ER nurses suffer because of the traumatic injuries they witness at work. They have to learn to deal with death and suffering, and it often takes an emotional toll on them. John Reeck’s article provides an honest and concise perspective on the world of emergency room nursing.
