ScienceDirect’s article provides detailed information about the rich history of flight nursing, the education and training required for this specialty, and what flight nursing looks like in action. According to the article, flight nursing started out as the Emergency Flight Corps in 1933, and its mission was to prove to the military that nursing could aid the wounded during transport. To become a flight nurse, there are several certifications and courses a nurse must take, such as the Flight Nurse Advanced Trauma Course. A flight nurse must be acquainted with changes in barometric pressure and gravitational forces; concepts which nurses who work on the ground do not have to be knowledgeable in. This article is quite long and descriptive, so I recommend it to those who have a special interest in this nursing specialty.
